WEEKLY THURSDAY WORKSHOP @ 10am-1pm

Hello Members,

Just a reminder of our weekly painting sessions every Thursday  from 10.00am – 1.00pm at the old Bucklands Beach Yacht Club hall. (This is not to be confused with the BBYC at Half Moon Bay)

For those of you who are unfamiliar with this venue, you will find it on Marine parade at Bucklands Beach, on the beach side of the road, where the road turns, between little Bucklands Beach, and the main beach. There is a car park and you can also park on the road outside.

We also incorporate still life drawing or painting, pastels, and any other medium of your choice.
“En plein air” weather permitting, as we have awesome views of the estuary to Rangitoto its a good reason to have an outdoor painting session, (or paint from the window) And if you are interested in learning about something or have an idea please let us know and we will try to accommodate you.
You are also free to bring along something you are working on, (you don’t have to participate in any group work) and get inspiration and feedback, or just come along for a chat, and meet fellow artists and exchange ideas.
Tea, coffee, and biscuits are provided.

This group will continue to mid-December before it recesses till the new year.

President

STUDIO TWO

November 30, 2022 By admin Leave a Comment

Two feature rooms and a miniature wall, plus a stand for unframed art, provide an excellent display gallery showing members artwork from the Howick Art Group. We also have three plinths to exhibit some of our artists other creative talents including sculptures and pottery.  These and the paintings are changed on the last weekend of the month except through the Christmas/New Year holiday season where everything is displayed till the end of January.

Mid Winter Exhibition 2022

April 18, 2022 By admin Leave a Comment

The Mid Winter Exhibition is held at the Fencible Lounge in July each year for four days from Thursday to Sunday.  This is a members only exhibition.  Exhibitors are required for 2-3 hourly roster duties during this exhibition.

New Classes for Midwinter
Last year we moved from medium based categories to genre based categories.
The classes will be as follows:

Class 1. Landscape.
This includes Cityscapes, which covers our urban environment and architecture, it also covers farm
buildings and equipment, garden scenes, lakes, and rivers.
Class 2. Seascape and Marine.
This includes the ocean, ships, small boats, sail boats, coastal, beaches, harbours, wharves and
boatyards etc.
Class 3. Portraits.
This includes figurative work, and the human form studies.
Class 4. Still life.
This includes objects, floral arrangements, indoors or outdoors, pot plants etc.
Class 5. Abstract.
This covers contemporary, and modern art.
Class 6. Wild Life.
This covers all animal life including pets and bird life.

NB. We have dropped mixed media as this is included in any genre.

Reason for Change
One of the main purposes of the committee is to advance the group. All major exhibitions are moving towards this kind of categorisation, so your committee felt the Howick Art Group should align with the best. It doesn’t matter what medium is used; it is the genre that counts. When judging, you are looking at composition, tonal values, techniques used and what the artist is trying to say. In other words, it is the painting that counts. If we stick to medium, then it is all about how the artist used their particular medium etc. not the painting. We feel it is better and fairer grouping genres together as is the trend overseas.
If you have any questions, or are unsure which class to enter your work, please phone:

President, Elise De Silva 0273288760

1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 1 merit for each category
Overall Best in Show Award
People’s Choice (to be awarded at the end of the exhibition after the count of votes)

Entry forms come out with the June Newsletter

Howick Art Group Art Exhibition & Sale

Hi Everyone,

We are very lucky to have permission from the Howick Village Association to put up our tents and display our art at the Fencible Green (between the old Hammer Hardware and Wild Wheat) on Saturday, 18th December. This is a great opportunity to get exposure for the club and sell some paintings! It is the last Saturday before Christmas, and with the Howick Market back up and running, we are sure to get lots of people coming through. Please support this event by bringing along your artwork and easels. If you don’t have an easel, I’m sure someone can share with you. Tents will go up at 9am and pack up at 2pm. Please be prompt and it would be lovely to have volunteers to man the event. Barry and Niels will need help with the tents so they will need helpers.

If the weather is inclement, we will cancel.
Everyone must wear masks and follow social distancing etc.
Can’t wait to see you there.

Art events and exhibitions, both local and in the greater Auckland area, are entered at the artists own discretion.

Some are as follows:

Matakana Art Festival

A&P Royal Easter Show
McLeans College Art Sale
Corban Estate Art Exhibition

Original Art Sale
Franklin Art Exhibition
Snells Beach Art Festival

Bruce McLaren Retirement Village Art Showcase
Sat 12 & Sun 13 March 2016  10am-4pm

The Art Showcase at Bruce McLaren as stated below was a great show and thoroughly enjoyed by all who came.  It is hopefully the first of many to be held there.  In fine surroundings, and with a relaxed atmosphere, both public and residents wandered through the exhibition taking in the many different and varied styles, mediums and subjects of painted works. With a very comfortable nearby lounge available for a cup of tea or coffee and a slice of cake, many came back again for a second look and finally went home with a treasured work of art.
